Canada is looking to build a much closer relationship with the European Union as its trade dispute with the United States continues to reshape Ottawa’s economic strategy.
CNN reported that Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is pursuing a unique alliance with the 27-member bloc, while stopping short of seeking full EU membership or entry into its common market. The discussions come as Canada tries to reduce its economic dependence on the United States following new trade tensions and tariffs.
Carney’s government has explored stronger European cooperation in areas including trade, investment, defense, energy and critical minerals. Canada and the EU already have extensive economic ties through their existing trade agreement, but the latest discussions could expand that relationship into additional strategic areas.
The talks reflect Canada’s broader effort to diversify its international partnerships while maintaining its sovereignty and existing relationships. Any new arrangement would still require negotiations over exactly how deeper cooperation with Europe would work.
